Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC).

PURPOSE:   To teach high school students the value of citizenship, responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.  Our focus is reflected in our mission statement, “TO MOTIVATE YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE BETTER CITIZENS.”  Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens.  The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, school, community, and our nation.

THIS PROGRAM INTENDS TO TEACH CADETS TO:

  1. Appreciate the ethical values and principles that underlie good citizenship.
  2. Develop leadership potential, while living and working cooperatively with others.
  3. Be able to think logically and to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.
  4. Appreciate the importance of physical fitness and maintaining good health.
  5. To learn and understand the importance that students must obtain a high school degree in order to enter college and earn other advanced educational and employment opportunities.
  6. Develop greater cognitive management abilities.
  7. Become familiar with military history as it relates to America’s culture and understand the history, purpose, and structure of the military services.
  8. Develop the skills necessary to work effectively as a member of a team.

COURSE LENGTH:  The course length is normally four years at a traditional high school, (Grades 9-12). JROTC summer camp is an additional component that supplements the JROTC curriculum for selected cadets. For those attending summer camp, additional focus is placed on developing cadets’ character, leadership skills, abilities, and potential.

JROTC Color Guard posted the colors for the Secretary of the Army's Acquisition Excellence Awards Ceremony held July 8, 2009 at Fort Belvoir, VA.
The Woodbridge Senior High School (WSHS) JROTC Color Guard posted the colors for the Secretary of the Army's Acquisition Excellence Awards Ceremony held July 8, 2009 at Fort Belvoir, VA.    Posting colors at a Secretary of the Army level awards program has been previously reserved exclusively for active duty military color guards.  The Secretary of the Army recognized acquisition professionals and teams whose performance and contributions set them apart from their peers with outstanding achievements in support of the Soldier and the Army’s Business Transformation efforts.   Over 150 senior Army acquisition professionals attended this annual awards ceremony.  The students were consistently praised throughout the ceremony by the various speakers for their professionalism and dedication.  Several speakers indicated that the WSHS JROTC cadets represent our nation's future leaders. The students are pictured below with Mr. Dean G. Popps, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology; and LTC (Retired) Victor Burnette, Senior Army Instructor, WSHS.  The students from L-R are:  Cadet Sergeant Ryell Bradley, Cadet Lieutenant Chelsea Queen, Cadet Lieutenant Briyana Bryant, Cadet Private Mikhail Pellegrino and Cadet Sergeant James Olphin.

Junior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Summer Camp Success - Fort A. P. Bowling Green, VA.
Congratulations to 11 of our cadets who attended the Junior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Summer Camp Success Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. The summer camp was conducted at Fort A. P. Bowling Green, VA.

The purpose of the camp was to provide an informative, challenging, safe and activity-filled leadership experience which will motivate our cadets to pursue individual and team excellence. The camp also strengthens our school’s JROTC program for school year 2009 to 2010. Cadets were carefully selected to attend this camp based on their demonstrated leadership and potential leadership skills.  Several of our cadets placed first, second and third as individuals or as team members in several of the competitions. Additionally, Woodbridge cadets served in various company, platoon, and squad leadership positions. Some of the camp highlights included:
Cadets who attended this year were: Brency Bermudez, Ashley Evans, Anthony Friedman, Alda Gebretekle, Arturo Hernandez, Levi Peterson, Abraham Quarcoo, Cameron Ruck, Stephan Samuels, Hannah Weatherington, and Lucas Wilks.

We look forward to a great year with our CampSuccess graduates. Hooah!

WSHS Color Guard and Unarmed Drill Teams Placed Second in Courtland Back to School Drill Meet
The Woodbridge Senior High School Army JROTC Color Guard and Unarmed Drill Teams participated in our season opening drill meet. Woodbridge won second place out of 14 schools in the overall competition category.  The Viking Battalion tied for first place in the Inspection category, placed first in Color Guard category, and placed second in Regulation Unarmed Platoon.  The Inspection team was lead by C/CPT S. Morales, the Color Guard was lead by C/2LT R. Bradley and the Regulation Unarmed Platoon was lead by C/1SG L. Colvin.  Hoo-ah!

Placing second in this competition is a great indicator of where we are headed this school year. Last year in this meet we only placed 3rd in the Inspections competition.  It was a long bus ride home. I am encouraged by all of the hard work that our cadets did to place second.  We are now preparing for our next drill competition at C.D. Hylton High School on Saturday, 14 November, 2009.  We have not competed with our sister Prince William County JROTC units since the WSHS Color Guard team won 1st place in the Freedom Museum Color Guard Competition on Saturday, 18 April, 2009.  Hope to see there.
