Adopt A Child for Christmas

This year, the Acting Battalion Commander, Cadet/ Captain Mike Conrad stated about the holiday season for the Viking Battalion, "we wanted to do just a little more for the community this year so the battalion teamed with Mrs. Cynthia Pagan-Hale, a mother of one of our cadets. She is a member of 1 Hope." This is a nonprofit organization where our cadets wrapped over 70 gifts this year for Bethany House of Northern Virginia this holiday season. Bethany House provides emergency shelter and resources to help women and children who are victims of domestic violence throughout Northern Virginia and the surrounding DC metro communities.

Cadet Lieutenant Remila Khan, Bn S-5, Special Projects Officer and the LTC (Ret) Burnette, the SAI, both stated that donations of cadet time and self service are some of the characteristics that our Army Values that our cadets learn they must adopt now and later in life. In fact, the creator of the Peanuts Cartoon, Charles Schulz, summed it up best for our cadets, "Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone."

Adopt A Family for Thanksgiving

Thank you to all the WSHS cadets who contributed to our annual Community Selfless Service Project -

Adopt a Family. According to Mike Conrad, Acting Battalion Commander, for the last 1 7 years the Viking Battalion has provided a Thanksgiving dinner to needy families in Prince William County through Cadets donating $2.00 or more. This donation represents the Selfless Service Army Core Value we learn in JROTC. We would like the thank Safeway Inc. and Mr. Steve Bliss from Great American Fundraising company for their donations.”" This year many cadets gave over and above this amount to our Thanksgiving and Christmas gift programs. While the cadets donate funds, our Assistant Instructor delivers the meals to the families during the school day and the Christmas gifts to Prince William County Social Services Office.

JROTC Academic and Leadership Bowl
Congratulations to our Viking Battalion Academic and Leadership Bowl Team members. Their recent performance as our inaugural team for this U.S. Army Cadet Command program was outstanding.  Our team consisted of several Military Science LET 1 to LET 3 cadets.  These cadets were selected because of their GPAs, recommendations by cadre, and current level of participation in JROTC and other school activities.  The goal of the Academic and Leadership Bowl Team program is to assess the basic understanding and basic learning of Army leadership knowledge and general academic information (math, science, history, geography, and current events).  As a member of the team, cadets used their prior learning to assess/improve their academic abilities, to help prepare them for college, and to develop/increase their critical thinking skills.

Santa's Old Bridge Parade
The Viking Battalion commemorated Veterans Day weekend by marching in the Woodbridge Old Santa Parade this past Saturday.  It has been four years since WSHS and the Army JROTC Cadets participated in the parade but from our presentation of military bearing, pride, professionalism, performance, and esprit de corps (Hooah!), the Viking Battalion brilliantly executed our second marching performance this school year. The paraded started at 10 a.m. from WSHS and ended at the Dillingham Square shopping area. Based on the comments from the well wishers and reviewing stand, our cadets did another outstanding job demonstrating what they learned during the first making period - leadership, drill and ceremony, unity of command, chain of command and proper wear and appearance in Uniform. Congrats Vikings!
